HONOLULU, HI - The 4th-ranked UC San Diego women's volleyball team cruised to a 30-27, 30-22, 30-20 win over Chaminade in Honolulu on Thursday night. Rebecca Bailey led three Tritons with at least 10 kills as Bailey tallied a match-high 16 kills. Amber Ries added 12 kills and hit .550 while Sylvia Schmidt added 10 kills and nine digs. UCSD hit at a blistering .410 clip in game one with 21 kills against five errors and never had a game hitting below .300 as the Tritons finished the night with a .364 hitting efficiency. The Tritons will have a busy Friday with two more matches, a 2:00 p.m. match with Northwest Nazarene and an 8:00 p.m. (Hawaii time) match against Hawaii Pacific.
In the first game, consecutive aces by Lauren Bradley and a kill by Schmidt gave the Tritons an early 13-8 edge. After CUH cut the deficit to 14-13, the Tritons scored five straight points, four on Bailey kills and a Natalie Facchini ace to lead 19-14. CU would rally back and give it one last chance, coming within 24-23, but a Bailey kill, followed by setter Elaine Chen's kill gave the Tritons a lead they would not surrender. A Ries kill ended the game at 30-27.
Trailing 5-3 in the second game, the Tritons stormed ahead with a 20-5 run to lead 23-10 and never looked back. Karen Reis ended the game at 30-22 with her kill.
In the third game, a Bradley block gave the Tritons a 9-5 edge. Leading 20-15, UCSD scored four straight points off Chen's serves to put the game out of reach. Ries closed out the match with her 12th kill of the night.
Eight Tritons recorded kills on the night. In addition to the trio of Tritons with 10-plus kills, Bradley added seven kills on .545 hitting and two aces. UCSD recorded a season-high six solo blocks on the night, while entering the match with two solo blocks in its previous four matches. Facchini's 15 digs were a match-high.
