No. 24 UCSD Drops Extra Inning Heartbreaker to No. 12 Cal State Stanislaus

TURLOCK, Calif. ? After waiting over 13 hours to resume its contest, the 24th-ranked UC San Diego softball team suffered a heartbreaking 3-0 loss in extra innings to 12th-ranked Cal State Stanislaus Warriors in the second round of the NCAA D-II Softball West Regional Tournament on Saturday morning.

 

The two teams played six innings of scoreless ball on Friday before the game was halted due to darkness. Play resumed at 9 a.m. on Saturday morning and two more scoreless innings followed  before the Warriors' Jessica Scholl hit a 3-run homerun to right center field in the top of the ninth inning.

 

UCSD had runners on first and second with two outs, but pinch-hitter Nicole Saari flied out to center field to end the game.

 

With the loss the Tritons fall to 35-26 and will play 3rd-ranked Humboldt State in an elimination game Saturday afternoon at 12:30 p.m. CSUS improves to 47-17 with the win and will face Hawaii Hilo at 3 p.m. in a winners' bracket contest.

 

The winner of the UCSD-HSU contest will play the final game on Saturday, at roughly 5:30 p.m., against the winner of the next contest between Sonoma State and Seattle University.

 

Jessica Gaumnitz threw all three innings for the Warriors on Saturday, relieving starter Omaira Estremera who allowed only three hits in six full inning of work to begin the game on Friday. Gaumnitz improves to 23-4 on the season with the win.

 

UCSD junior Melissa Ward threw all nine innings in the loss and fell to 27-13 on the season. She allowed the three earned runs on eight hits while walking one and striking out seven.

 

Freshman Amanda Eliades collected two of the Tritons' five hits in the contest while Brittni Carino, Allison May and Randelle Bundy accounted for the other three.

 

In addition to her homerun, Scholl also had a double while Rita Argott also stroked two singles in the win for the Warriors.
