IRVINE, Calif. ? The 14th-ranked UC San Diego women's water polo team lost two games on the first day of the UC Irvine Inviational on Saturday afternoon. In the first game, UCSD lost to 5th-ranked California 14-5. Sarah Bajorek led all scorers with four goals. Sydney Gstettenbauer had the UCSD's other goal. Goalie Kim Hockett had 10 saves. UCSD then went up against 12th-ranked UC Santa Barbara. The Gauchos would win 8-5, outscoring UCSD 5-2 in periods two and three. Lauren Woods scored twice for UCSD, while Nicole Hermann, Natalie Hockett and Gstettenbauer also scored. UCSD will continue at the Invitational with two more games on Sunday. UCSD faces Santa Clara at 10:30 a.m. at Corona del Mar HS.
The losses even the Tritons' record at 4-4 on the season.
In the loss to Cal, the Bears took command in the first period, leading 5-1. With the score 9-4 Cal after three, the Bears put the game away in the final period, scoring five times to win 14-5.
Against the Gauchos, the teams were tied at 1-1 through one, as Gstettenbauer scored for the Tritons. UCSD would trail 4-2 at the intermission. UCSB scored the first two goals of the third period to lead 6-2 and the Tritons would get no closer than three goals.
