LA JOLLA, Calif. ? The 23rd-ranked UC San Diego women's volleyball team defeated Cal State Dominguez Hills 30-26, 30-17, 30-13 on Saturday night in RIMAC Arena. It was the 14th consecutive sweep for UCSD against CSUDH, a streak which dates back to the 2001 season. The Tritons overcame a slow game one in which they hit .171 and rebounded to hit .321 and .611 in games two and three, respectively. Rebecca Bailey paced the Tritons with 12 kills, while Casey Wilson added nine kills. The Tritons served up 13 aces, including four consecutive by Karen Reis in game two. Natalie Facchini recorded a match-high 15 digs, while Michelle Torres added 10. UCSD improves to 13-6, 7-4 CCAA while the Toros drop to 2-20, 1-10 CCAA.
In addition to Bailey's 12 kills, the junior outside hitter added four blocks, three digs and three aces while hitting at a .455 clip.
CSUDH was led by Sophia Lopes with eight kills and Lauren Wells added five kills.
Both teams struggled in the early parts of game one. The Tritons took the first three-point lead at 14-11 after a CSUDH error. The Toros went on a run to take a 19-17 lead after a Lopes ace. UCSD quickly responded with its first run of the game, scoring five straight to lead 22-19. UCSD's lead would not get smaller than three points the rest of the way as Wilson put down the final kill in the game at 30-26 UCSD.
The Tritons scored the first three points of the second game and took off from there, leading 8-2 early on. With the Tritons leading 19-11, Reis served up four consecutive aces, giving the Tritons a commanding 24-11 lead. UCSD would hit .321 to CSUDH's -.062 and cruise to the 30-17 win.
The Tritons hit .611 in the third game and scored 13 of the first 16 points of the game. Serving runs by Elaine Chen and a late one by Kimberly Carpenter sealed the win, 30-13 UCSD.
UCSD is back in action next week, hosting Cal State Stanislaus at 7:00 p.m. on Friday October 19.
