LOS ANGELES, Calif. ? The UC San Diego men's soccer team pulled off a big upset on Friday night, defeating Cal State L.A. by a 1-0 margin at the Jesse Owens Track on the CSULA campus. With the victory the Tritons improve to 3-9-2 overall and 2-6-1 in California Collegiate Athletic Association play while the Golden Eagles drop out of first place in the CCAA South Division standings, falling to 9-4-2 overall and 7-2-0 in league play.
Freshman David Bakal netted his first collegiate goal, scoring the game-winner in the 71st minute off a pass from junior Jonathan Sawyer. Bakal won the ball after a flurry in the front of the goal and drilled his shot into the corner of the net from the top of the box.
The Tritons were out-shot on the night by a 12-6 margin but held a 5-3 advantage in corner kicks.
UCSD netminder Peter Akman made five saves to secure his third shutout of the season. He lowers his goals-against average down to 1.58 after the 90 minutes of scoreless action on Friday evening.
Cal State L.A. goalkeeper Tobias Hummel made two saves on the night in the loss while John Massaquoi took a game-high four shots in the loss, three of which were on goal.
Interim head coach Paul Holohan and his squad will return home to host their final four regular season matches of the season, beginning next weekend when the Tritons host Chico State on Friday night and Cal State Stanislaus on Sunday afternoon. Game times are slated for 4:30 p.m. and 2:30 p.m., respectively.
