MONTEREY, Calif. ? The UC San Diego men's basketball team held a 3-point advantage at halftime but was out-scored by a 36-18 margin in the second half to fall by a 71-56 margin on Saturday night to CSU Monterey Bay at the Kelp Bed in Monterey. The loss drops the Tritons to 6-10 overall and 4-7 in CCAA play while the Otters improve to 9-7 overall and 6-5 in league action.
The Tritons, who shot a red-hot 61.5% from the floor in the first half, went very cold in the second stanza, making only 7 of 23 shots from the field and an awful 1 of 7 from the charity stripe. UCSD managed to make only two of its 10 shots from long range in the second half after going 3-for-6 from behind the 3-point arc in the first 20 minutes.
Sophomore Henry Patterson netted a season-high 21 points in the loss, going 10-for-15 from the floor while also pulling down a team-high six rebounds. Senior Robby Peters and sophomore Kelvin Kim added 10 points in the loss for UCSD.
Richard Jenkins led all scorers on the night, scoring 25 while grabbing 10 rebounds in the win for CSUMB. Augie Johnston added 16 points while Joe Mitchell netted six points and a game-high 11 boards for the Otters.
CSUMB made 26 of its 54 shots from the floor on the night but made 15 of 17 from the free throw line which proved to be the difference in the contest. The Otters also dominated the glass, grabbing 38 rebounds while limiting the Tritons to only 21 boards on the night.
UCSD returns to action next weekend, playing at Cal State Stanislaus on Friday night before traveling to Chico State for a Saturday night affair. Both games are slated for 7:30 p.m. tip-offs.
