UC Davis Wins 2006 Women's WWPA Title

 

LA JOLLA, Calif. - UC Davis defeated Loyola Marymount in the seventh annual Women's Western Water Polo Association Championship, earning the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. The Aggies defeated the Lions 8-7 in a game with six ties and three lead changes. UCD's Katherine O'Rourke scored the game winner and was named the WWPA Most Valuable Player. The Newcomer of the Year award went to CSUB's Amanda Ortiz and the Coach of the Year was awarded to Santa Clara's Keith Wilbur.

 

Game 15: Chapman 10, CSUMB 9

CSUMB jumped out to a 4-2 lead but Chapman scored six of the next seven goals to charge in front 8-5 at the end of three periods. CSUMB would close within two goals on two occassions in the fourth quarter, but a Chapman goal by Jennifer Manship clinched the victory for the Panthers. Chapman goals: Eich (3), Carter (2), Bartel (2), Manship, MacLean, Belcher. CSUMB goals: Laning (5), Davis (3), Garcia.

Game 16: Colorado State 6, UCSC 1

Emily Chambers scored three times for CSU as the Rams led 3-1 at halftime and shutout UCSC the rest of the way. CSU goals: Chambers (3), White, Quinn, Fernandez. UCSC goals: Colby.

Game 17: SSU 6, CSUEB 4

Sonoma State led 2-0 after the first quarter. Both teams matched each other in the second quarter with three goals apiece as SSU led 5-3 at halftime. CSUEB pulled within one in the third quarter on a goal by Kai Bourne. SSU's Chelsea Hennan gave the Seawolves a two goal lead in the third with her strike. Neither team scored in the final period. SSU goals: Hoddock (2), Versage, Hennan, Truman, Phelps. CSUEB goals: Waterman, Aguiniga, Bourne (2).

Game 18: CSUSB 11, CSUB 8

CSUSB led 3-2 after the first quarter. In the second quarter, both teams could not stop each other as each team scored four goals apiece as CSUSB led 8-7 at half. CSUSB outscored CSUB 4-2 in the second half to earn the win. CSUSB goals: F. Berg (4), B.Berg (4), Jonckheere (2), Reneker. CSUB goals: Blinovskaya (2), Keogh (2), Ortiz (2), Bowling, Bates.

Game 19: SCU 6, UCSD 5

SCU scored the first three goals of the game before the Tritons' Judy Emaus scored to make the game 3-1 SCU at halftime. Trailing 5-3, UCSD's Natalie Hockett scored her third of the game to pull UCSD within one. Judy Emaus scored in the fourth to tie the game. With :18 seconds left, SCU's Claire Linney netted the game winner for SCU. SCU goals: Evans (2), Linney, Lamb, Bonk, Simpkins. UCSD goals: Hockett (3), Emaus (2).

Game 20: UC Davis 8, LMU 7

UC Davis won in a game with six ties and three lead changes. A goal by LMU's Nicole Hughes tied the game at 7-7 with 1:47 left to play. UCD's Katherine O'Rourke scored with :57 remaining, which turned out to be the game winner. LMU had one last chance but the last attempt was high.
