LA JOLLA, Calif. - Loyola Marymount, UC Davis, Santa Clara and UC San Diego advanced to the Women's Western Water Polo semifinals on Friday afternoon at Canyonview Pool. The Tritons defeated Cal State San Bernardino by one goal, one of three games on the first day decided by one score. Sonoma State and Cal State East Bay also had one-goal wins. The seventh annual Women's WWPA tournament will continue on Saturday, with the semifinals coming later in the day at 1:45 and 3:00 p.m. UC Davis takes on Santa Clara in the first semifinal, while LMU takes on UCSD in the second semifinal. The tournament concludes with another full day of action on Sunday, with the winner earning a trip to the NCAA's.
Game One: CSUSB 13, CSUMB 3
CSUSB jumped out to a 7-3 halftime lead, after CSUMB trailed 3-2 after the first quarter. The Coyotes shutout the Otters 6-0 in the second half. The Coyotes' Sarah Reneker scored a game-high five times. CSUMB goals: Bouttle, Laning, Koorndyke. CSUSB goals: Reneker (5), Bridget Berg (2), Freyja Berg (2), de Vonokeere (2), Carruthers, Hasting.
Game Two: Sonoma State 7, Colorado State 6
Sonoma State led 2-1 after the first quarter and 3-2 at halftime. SSU opened up a 5-2 lead in the third period before CSU scored the last goal of the third and first of the fourth to close within 5-4. With SSU leading 6-5, SSU's Amanda Hoddock scored her second goal of the fourth quarter with 1:01 left to give the Seawolves control at 7-5. CSU scored with :27 left to close within one goal, but could not get possession back. SSU goals: Hennan (3), Hoddock (2), McEwen, Phelps. CSU goals: White (4), Quinn, Fernandez.
Game Three: CSUB 9, Chapman 4
CSUB scored three first quarter goals to lead 3-1 after one. CU closed to within 2-3 on a score by Caetlan MacLean early in the second period. CSUB would score the next two times before half to lead 5-2 at the intermission. CSUB's Yulia Blinovskaya scored three times in the third to put CSUB up 8-2. CSUB goals: Blinovskaya (5), Mason (2), Keogh, Ortiz. CU goals: Belcher, Carter, MaClean, Manship.
Game Four: CSUEB 7, UCSC 6
UCSC jumped out to a 4-1 lead at halftime. UCSC continued to lead through three quarters at 6-3. CSUEB scored at 5:33 and 3:50 to cut the defecit down to 6-5. CSUEB scored on a goal by Heather Campell with :28 left to tie the game up. In the final seconds of play, a UCSC defender was called for blocking a shot with two hands and gave a penalty shot to CSUEB's Campell, who converted the goal on gave CSUEB the comeback win. CSUEB goals: Campbell 3, Waterman, Kohs, Foley, Flaherty. UCSC goals: Logaston 2, Stripling, Meyers, Keating, #17.
Game Five: UCSD 6, CSUSB 5
UCSD led 2-1 after the first quarter and 5-3 at halftime. The Tritons extended the lead to 6-3 before CSUSB scored with :06 remaining in the third to come within 6-4. CSUSB's Bridget Berg scored with 1:27 in the fourth to bring the Coyotes closer. UCSD's Kaitlin Foe picked up the save on the final Coyotes' possession to give UCSD the 6-5 win. UCSD goals: Nordstrom (2), Emaus (2), LaRochelle (2). CSUSB goals: Torres, Reneker, Freyja Berg, Bridget Berg.
Game Six: SCU 12, SSU 4
With the scored tied at 1-1 after the first period, SCU outscored SSU 5-1 in the second quarter to lead 6-2 at halftime. SSU would pull no closer than four goals the rest of the way as SCU shutout SSU 3-0 in the final quarter to win 12-4. SCU goals: Radvanyi (3), Simpkins (3), Evans (2), Anderson (2), Lamb, Bacolini. SSU goals: Hoddock (2), Versage, Hennan.
Game Seven: UCD 8, CSUB 5
The teams battled to a 2-2 draw in the first quarter. UCD went ahead 5-3 at halftime as three different Aggies scored. UCD extended the lead to 7-3 through three quarters and cruised to the 8-5 win. UCD goals: O'Rouke (3), O'Neil (2), Raycraft (2), Soza. CSUB goals: Ortiz (2), Baker, Keogh, Blinovskaya.
Game Eight: LMU, CSUEB
The Lions scored seven times in the first period and led 7-0 and never looked back. CSUEB's Laura Waterman scored the lone goal as LMU led 11-1 at the intermission. LMU added two scores in the third and five scores in the fourth to win 18-1. LMU goals: Fish (3), Abrams (3), Wike (2), Colton (2), Pardi (2), Robinson (2), Hicks (2), Hughes, Hamilton.
