LA JOLLA, Calif. ? The 17th-ranked UC San Diego women's tennis team wrapped up a perfect California Collegiate Athletic Association season with a convincing 9-0 win over Cal Poly Pomona on Wednesday afternoon at the Northview Tennis Courts on the UCSD campus.
With the win the Tritons improve to 13-6 overall and 10-0 in league play while the Broncos fall to 10-6 overall and 6-3 in CCAA action. The undefeated record in 2006 is the 3rd-straight season that the Tritons have posted a perfect league mark, capturing three CCAA titles in the process.
UCSD jumped out to an early 3-0 lead after the doubles portion of the match, winning at No. 1 by an 8-5 score before posting wins by scores of 8-1 and 8-2.
The Tritons closed out the match with six straight-set victories including a narrow 7-5, 7-5 win at the No. 5 spot by Tessa Tran over Kelley Wong. Ina Dan notched a 6-1, 6-0 win over Jenny Tsai at the top spot on the ladder while Justine Ang Fonte had a 6-2, 6-1 victory at the No. 2 spot.
Head coach Liz LaPlante and the Tritons conclude the 2006 regular season with a Saturday morning match at Cal State Northridge. The Tritons take on the Matadors at 11 a.m. in Northridge. UCSD will then await word on its postseason matchup, the first round is due to start on Thursday, May 4 at a time and site still to be determined.
