17th-Ranked Tritons Clinch Third Consecutive CCAA Title with 7-2 Win

POMONA, Calif. ? The 17th-ranked UC San Diego women's tennis team clinched its third-straight California Collegiate Athletic Association Championship with a convincing 7-2 win over Cal Poly Pomona on Saturday afternoon at the Kellogg Tennis Center in Pomona.

With the victory the Tritons improve to 12-6 overall and 9-0 in CCAA action while the Broncos fall to 10-5 overall and 6-2 in league play. The two teams will meet again next week, this time in La Jolla, on Wednesday, April 19. First serve is slated for 2 p.m. at the Northview Tennis Courts.

UCSD jumped out to an early 2-1 lead after doubles play as Marsha Malinow teamed with Ina Dan for an 8-6 win at the No. 2 spot while Justine Ang Fonte combined with Molly Sullens for an 8-2 victory at the 3-spot on the ladder.

In singles play, the Tritons won five of six matches, all of which came in straight sets. Ang Fonte and Sullens each won their matches by identical 6-1, 6-1 scores while Kristin Bronowicki was up 6-1 before her opponent was forced to retire with an injury.

If the Tritons can defeat the Broncos again on Friday, it will conclude their third-straight undefeated league season.
