No. 15 UCSD Wins the Third-Place game at the WWPA Championships on Sunday

No. 13 UCSD Nearly Upsets No. 4 LMU

LA JOLLA, Calif. -The 13th-ranked UC San Diego women's water polo fell behind to No. 4 Loyola Marymount 8-1, before putting together a furious comeback and losing to the Lions 10-9 on Friday night in front of 450 fans at Canyonview Pool.  Down 10-5 in the third quarter, UCSD scored four unanswered to make a game of it.  Sarah Bajorek and Nicole Hermann led the Tritons with three goals apiece.  Flynn LaRochelle, Michelle Perkins and Bridgette Bugay also scored for the Tritons.  LMU's Christine Robinson and Katie Hicks scored three apiece.

 

LMU scored the first six goals of the game before Bajorek scored the first of two second period goals in the quarter at the 4:02 mark.  Bajorek would score with :01 remaining in the half to pull UCSD within 9-4 at the break.

 

LaRochelle opened up the scoring in the second half at 6:22, bringing UCSD within 9-5.  LMU's Dora Szabolesi scored to open up a 10-5 lead.  Hermann scored with 1:30 remaining and Bugay scored just before the end of the period to bring UCSD with 10-7 after three.

 

The Tritons cut it down to two goals at 3:42 on a strike by Hermann.  The Tritons battled to the end and scored just before the end of the game as Bajorek put one in.  Unfortunately time ran out as the Tritons put together a great comeback and fell short 10-9.

 

UCSD plays against its alumni on Saturday at 11:00 a.m.  The Tritons are off untill April 1, when they take on USC at San Diego State.
