POMONA, Calif. ? The UC San Diego men's basketball team suffered a heartbreaking 56-53 loss at Cal Poly Pomona on Friday evening in Kellog Gymnasium. With the loss the Tritons fall to 13-13 overall and 10-7 in CCAA play while the Broncos improve to 15-9 overall and 11-6 in league play.
UCSD trailed by a 26-23 score at halftime but forced nine ties in the second half and even held a slim 1-point lead at 53-52 with 1:13 to go before a Dion Cook layup with 33 seconds remaining gave CPP the lead again.
Coming out of a 30 second timeout with only 22 seconds remaining, head coach Bill Carr drew up a play that got sophomore Clint Allard a clean look at a 3-pointer with :06 remaining that narrowly missed. The Broncos corralled the rebound and Cook iced the game with a dunk to put Cal Poly Pomona up 56-53 with less than a second remaining.
The Tritons had no time to get off a desperation shot to tie the game as the Broncos avenged an 83-79 overtime loss to UCSD on January 21 in RIMAC Arena on the La Jolla campus.
Junior Robby Peters hit four 3-pointers en route to a team-high 12 points for the Tritons. Sophomore transfer Jason Bull added 10 while the team's leading scorer, freshman Henry Patterson, was limited to nine points, four below his season average. Clint Allard added three points, seven rebounds and seven assists in the loss.
Jonathan Boyd led the Broncos with 12 points while Cook added 11. Kaelen Daniels rounded out the CPP players who scored in double figures with his 10 points.
UCSD returns to action on Saturday evening at Cal State Dominguez Hills. Tip-off is slated for 7:30 p.m. in the Torodome on the CSUDH campus in Carson, Calif.
