LA JOLLA, Calif. ? The 12th-ranked UC San Diego women's volleyball team played an exciting four games in defeating Cal Poly Pomona 30-20, 30-28, 28-30, 30-21 on Friday night in RIMAC Arena. After winning game one, UCSD fell behind 23-14, before a furious rally brought the Tritons to a 24-24 tie and the eventual game two win. UCSD had a lead of 27-24 in game three, but CPP used a series of blocks to come back and take the game. Rebecca Bailey had a match-high 14 kills while Nicole Courtney just missed a triple-double with 12 kills, 14 digs and nine aces. CPP, the top blocking team in the conference, outblocked the Tritons 18-12. UCSD improves to 18-2, 13-2 CCAA while CPP drops to 7-13, 4-11 CCAA.
The Tritons led 7-0 and 12-1 in the first game as Courtney had four aces in the run. Eight points was as close as CPP would get as the Tritons took game one 30-20.
CPP controlled game two early, taking a nine point lead on several occasions, the last at 23-14. WIth Michelle Torres serving, UCSD scored six straight, including an ace, an Amber Ries kill and two Courtney kills to pull within 23-20. The Tritons would tie the match at 24-24 and would take its first lead at 28-27 on a CPP error. Bailey sent down the final two kills as the Tritons won 30-28.
Game three was close throughout, untill UCSD opened up a 27-23 lead, making a sweep look possible. CPP then stormed back and tied the game at 28-28 and two more UCSD attack errors gave CPP the 30-28 win, and force a game four.
Game four featured four consecutive aces by Courtney, giving her nine in the match and UCSD a 14-7 lead. UCSD stretched the lead to 12 at 22-10, before CPP made a small run to cut it to 23-16. A Courtney kill, CPP attack error and a solo block by Brianna Koche gave the Tritons a 26-17 edge and the Tritons won on a Hannah Gary kill at 30-21.
UCSD is back in action on Saturday when it hosts No. 3 Cal State San Bernardino. First serve is set for 7:00 p.m. in RIMAC Arena.
