UCSD Falls Just Short to Cal State Bakersfield, Loses 2-1 at Home on Sunday

LA JOLLA, Calif. ? The UC San Diego men's soccer team had its slim CCAA Tournament hopes dashed on Sunday following the 2-1 loss to Cal State Bakersfield at Triton Soccer Field. With the loss UCSD falls to 7-8-2 overall and 5-7-2 in league play while the Roadrunners improve to 11-5-2 overall and 7-5-2 in conference action.

The Tritons got the scoring started in the 10th minute of play as a Tom Winkler corner kick floated into the box where it bounced around three times before senior Dustin Tannenhaus slammed the ball past CSUB netminder Steve Trojanowski for a 1-0 lead.

The Roadrunners bounced right back, scoring less than three minutes later as Ryan Gay made a run into the box and beat UCSD goalkeeper Joshua Vasquez on the low side to even the score at one apiece. Gay's goal was made possible off a Lyle Martin feed.

Martin also had a hand in the second CSUB goal as the ?Runners took a 2-1 lead in the 63rd minute after Rigoberto Pinero sent a ball up the sidline where Martin sent a crossing ball into the penalty area to the awaiting foot of Javier Barba. Barba gathered the ball and quickly beat Vasquez from six yards out.

UCSD had several opportunities down the stretch where it had a good look on goal, but could not get any on frame and ended up losing by the 2-1 margin.

CSUB held a 14-12 advantage in shots, but it was the shots on goal that showed a big discrepancy as the ?Runners put 10 shots on frame, compared to only two for the Tritons.

Trojanowski ended the match with one save and one goal allowed for CSUB while Vasquez allowed the two goals while making eight saves in his 90 minutes of action between the pipes.

UCSD will conclude the 2006 season with two road matches next weekend in Northern California. The Tritons will play at San Francisco State on Friday afternoon before traveling to CSU Monterey Bay on Sunday.
