LA JOLLA, Calif. ? The UC San Diego men's soccer team snapped its seven match winless streak with a thrilling 1-0 victory over Cal State L.A. in double overtime on Friday evening at Triton Soccer Field. With the victory the Tritons improve to 7-7-2 overall and 5-6-2 in California Collegiate Athletic Association play while dropping the Golden Eagles, who entered play atop the CCAA South Division standings, to 8-7-1 overall and 7-6-0 in league play. The win keeps UCSD's slim postseason hopes alive.
The Tritons got the golden goal in the first minute of the second overtime period as freshman Tony Choi sent a cross to the waiting foot of senior Mark Moreira who hammered the ball from seven yards out, beating CSULA netminder Patrick Fry between his legs for his seventh goal of the season. The victory was the Tritons' fourth double overtime victory on the season as their record in overtime matches in 2006 improved to 4-1-2.
The match was close the entire 101 minutes of play as each team posted almost identical stats. The Golden Eagles out-shot the Tritons by an 18-14 margin, but it was UCSD that held a slim 6-5 advantage in corner kicks. CSULA committed 13 of the 25 fouls in the match but did hold a commanding advantage in shots on goal, taking 11 on the night, compared to only six for UCSD.
UC San Diego netminder Joshua Vasquez picked up his first collegiate shutout, posting 11 big saves in his 101 minutes between the pipes. Six of those saves came after the second half, two of which were made in the first overtime period. His counterpart, Patrick Fry, made five saves on the night for CSULA.
UCSD returns to action on Sunday, hosting Cal State Bakersfield at 3:30 p.m. at Triton Soccer Field. The contest is the last regular season home match for the Tritons in 2006 and will be preceded by a brief ceremony to honor the seven outgoing senior student-athletes on Senior Day.
