Thiago Barbosa joined the UC San Diego women's volleyball staff as an assistant coach in August of 2020 and enters his fourth season with the Tritons in 2023.
Barbosa came to La Jolla from Bay Port High School in Green Bay, Wisc., where he served as head coach of the varsity women's volleyball program since 2019 after joining the staff as an assistant coach in 2018. In his first season at the helm, he led the Pirates to their first conference title in school history as the team finished with an impressive 29-3 overall record. Barbosa was named the 2019 Fox River Classic Conference coach of the year.
Before arriving at Bay Port, Barbosa was an assistant coach at the University of Wisconsin Green Bay. He helped the team reach the championship match of the Horizon League Tournament and the quarterfinals of the Postseason NIVC. He assisted in all aspects of the Phoenix volleyball program, helping in recruiting, team travel, player development, and program enhancement.Â
From 2014 to 2017, Barbosa was a volunteer assistant coach for the West Virginia University Mountaineers out of the Big 12 Conference.
A native of Brazil, Barbosa worked with extensively with the Sociedadede Ginåsticade Porto Alegre (SOGIPA) volleyball teams. For four years he was an assistant coach for the U12 to U18 girls teams as well as a strength and conditioning coach for both girls and boys youth volleyball teams. For one season, he also had the opportunity to work with a Division I men's professional volleyball team.
Barbosa played collegiately for the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul before moving on to play professionally in Europe.
Barbosa earned a bachelor's degree in coaching and physical education from Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul in 2010 and a master's degree in athletic coaching from West Virginia University in 2017.
