Ryan Newell

Ryan Newell

Ryan Newell, named the UCSD men's volleyball program's top assistant in September of 2010, enters his second year with the Tritons in 2011-12. Newell assists with all aspects of the program, including video analysis, recruiting, in-match strategy and summer camps.

Newell helped lead UCSD through a solid 2011 campaign. Ranked as high as 11th nationally, the Tritons finished with six MPSF wins, including upsets at No. 4 Stanford, at No. 5 UCLA, at No. 7 UC Irvine, at No. 11 Pepperdine and vs. No. 11 Hawaii. The win at Stanford was not only the Tritons' first ever at Maples Pavilion, it also snapped the 18-match home win streak of the Cardinal.

In late March, UCSD hosted third-ranked Ohio State and took a four-set win over the Buckeyes, who went on to win the national championship.

Senior setter Phil Bannan was a Second Team All-MPSF selection after becoming UCSD's all-time leader in assists and service aces. Middle blocker Calvin Ross took over as the school's career leader in blocks. Four Tritons were named MPSF All-Academic Scholar-Athletes in 2011.

Prior to coming to La Jolla, Newell was an assistant coach with the Cal women's volleyball program. Over the 2009-10 season, he helped the Golden Bears in various respects, including setting up practice drills, scouting opponents' offenses, maintaining analysis reports, editing and preparing video and tracking in-match scenarios.

During the spring season, Cal finished with a mark of 21-11 overall and went 11-7 in the Pac-10. The Golden Bears' playoff run ended in the Gainesville Regional Championship with a loss to No. 1 Penn State.

While working at Cal, Newell also held the head coaching position with the NorCal Volleyball Club's competitive Girls 17 team. In that role, he developed training programs and team philosophies while also designing a video scouting system for match analysis.

Previously, Newell served as a player, captain and president of the Chico State men's club team while pursuing his undergraduate degree from 2005 to 2008. As a junior in 2007, he earned All-Northern California Collegiate Volleyball League Honorable Mention accolades. A year later, he received All-NCCVL Second Team honors and finished runner-up as the Chico State Sport Clubs Men's Athlete of the Year.

Through his four years at Chico State, he also served as assistant coach for the Wildcats' women's volleyball squad under head coach Cody Hein. Since 2005, Newell has also spent time as a lead coach for the Gold Medal Squared volleyball camps held in Midway, Utah.

Newell received a Bachelor of Science degree in business administration in 2008.
