2008-09: Redshirted his first season at UCSD.

HIGH SCHOOL: A 2008 graduate of Harvard-Westlake High School in North Hollywood, Calif., where he was the first freshman to make varsity in school history… An all-league selection, he helped guide the team to a CIF Championship… Named the HWHS Athlete of the Year.

PERSONAL: Born October 4, 1989… Parents are Paul and Marla Merkle… Both parents attended UCSB and then received masters from USC…  Has a younger sister named Leah… Is a Los Angeles Lakers fan… LeBron James and Michael Jordan are two of his personal heroes… Enjoys watching The Matrix… Hobbies include music, movies, writing, and reading… Is a Psychology major in Marshall College.
