General
NCAA, institutional, and Federal regulations limit the amount and types of financial aid which you are permitted to receive as a scholar-athlete. "Financial aid" refers to funds provided to scholar-athletes from various sources to pay or assist in paying their cost of education at the institution, including athletic scholarships, federal grants, state grants, and outside financial awards. Accepting impermissible financial aid can render you ineligible to practice or compete and can lead to serious consequences for your team and the institution. Please reach out to the Athletics Compliance Office if you are having any financial issues - they will point you to the correct resource, whether that is in athletics or in the university’s Financial Aid Office.
Outside Scholarships
It is the responsibility of each scholar-athlete to notify the Athletics Compliance Office if they may be receiving any financial support, scholarships, grants, honorary awards, financial aid and/or loans assistance from an outside source other than that contained in their institutionally approved financial aid package, their athletics scholarship award, or provided by parent(s) or legal guardian(s). While it is generally permissible for scholar-athletes to accept outside scholarships, these awards can impact your individual/team scholarship limits and your eligibility. All outside scholarships received by UC San Diego scholar-athletes must be submitted to the Financial Aid Office for review.
Eligibility for Athletics Scholarships
In order to qualify for an athletics scholarship, a student-athlete must meet all applicable NCAA, conference and institutional regulations for receiving such financial aid (e.g., be a qualifier or a partial qualifier as a freshman scholar-athlete). A scholar-athlete may receive up to five years of athletically-related financial aid within six years of initial full-time collegiate enrollment.
Renewals/Nonrenewals
If a scholar-athlete's scholarship is expiring, they will be notified by the institution's Financial Aid Office by July 1 whether their award has been renewed for the following academic year. All non-renewals are appealable through the Financial Aid Office.
