TRITON VOTING INITIATIVE

Voting Initiative Registration

UC San Diego's Triton Athletes' Council (TAC) has announced its Triton Voting Initiative program. TAC's stated goal is to have all UC San Diego scholar-athletes registered to vote beginning with this year's federal, state, and local elections.

While driven primarily by TAC, the Triton Voting Initiative is part of UC San Diego Athletics' mission to develop inclusive leaders for life. The goal of the campaign is to educate and engage coaches, scholar-athletes, and Athletics staff on the importance of civic engagement.

In addition to voter registration, TAC has worked with the Athletics Department to ensure Election Day is a quiet day with no competitions or team practices scheduled to help facilitate scholar-athletes' ability to vote.

Other Ways to Get Involved/Increase Civic Engagement

Type of Involvement and Resources

  • Supporting candidates in more ways than voting
There are many ways to support candidates you are passionate about. The Federal Election Commission does a great job of walking people through the various ways to support a candidate from volunteering, campaigning, and more.
  • Volunteering in protests/rallies
If you are someone who wants to be more active with political protests or rallies, there are a variety of ways to do so, such as donating your time by volunteering at an event or resources (finances, time, etc.). These opportunities will differ from region to region.

Choosing a Party

Reading the platforms of each party is the best way to get a sense of what they believe in.

Students should also note if their state is an "open" or "closed" primary state. If it is an open state, anyone may participate in a party's primary and many voters choose to register as an independent in these states. In closed primary states, only registered members of that party can vote in the primary. In that case, people tend to register for the party that most closely matches their beliefs so they may help select that party's nominees.

In either case, the party one registers for does NOT impact who they can vote for in the November (General) election. Anyone can vote for whoever they want in the general election even if they are not a member of your political party.
