Game Recap: Men's Volleyball |

Tritons Continue to Roll with Win at Menlo

ATHERTON, Calif. — No. 10 UC San Diego men's volleyball won its fourth-straight match on Saturday night with a 25-21, 25-16, 25-17 sweep at Menlo.

The Tritons hit a season-high .534 while holding the Oaks to .127. UC San Diego (8-4) also had a season-high 10 aces.

Sebastiano Sani (13) and Luke Chandler (10) both reached double-digit kills. Seven Tritons combined for 17 total blocks, with Chandler and Peter Selcho both registering a team-high of four. The team saw five players land aces, led by John Luers with four and Sebastiano Sani with two.

HOW IT HAPPENED
A Sani kill give the Tritons a 12-8 lead in set one, which they later stretched to 20-14 after a block from Chandler. Menlo then mounted a rally with five-straight points to only trail by one, but the Tritons recovered by taking the next three points to go up 23-19. That margin would hold as the visitors took the first game 25-21.

Set two saw an early 6-1 run for UC San Diego that give the Tritons a 10-6 advantage. The second was their best offensive set of the night as they landed 15 kills with just two errors. The Tritons stretched the lead out to six and then took four of the final five rallies to win set two by nine, 25-16.

The third set was more of the same as five-straight points gave the Tritons an early lead that they held for the rest of the set. Luers had three of his aces during that early stretch, which saw the Tritons go up 7-4. UC San Diego slowly grew the lead during the rest of the set, leading by five before again going on another late burst to take the set by eight, 25-17.

TRITON TIDBITS
  • Luers' four aces are a career high.
  • In addition to now winning four-straight matches, all four of the Tritons' wins have been sweeps.
  • UC San Diego is now 3-0 all-time against Menlo.
QUOTABLE
"Tonight was a pretty good match," head coach Brad Rostratter said. "We started a little bit slower, but we had pretty consistent pressure created with our serve. That really kept them either from being in system or having too many good offensive opportunities, and that translated into us limiting their hitting percentage. Offensively we continue to get a little bit better and a little bit crisper, especially in the phase of attacking where we are making sure we're hitting the court and forcing the other team to play volleyball throughout."

UP NEXT
The Tritons will face Vanguard twice next week. The two teams will meet in Costa Mesa on Wednesday, Feb. 25, before batting in La Jolla on Friday, Feb. 27, at LionTree Arena.
