LA JOLLA, Calif. – UC San Diego sophomore designated player
Maalia Cherry has been named The Big West Softball Field Player of the Week, it was announced by the conference office on Monday.
A first year Triton, Cherry ripped nine hits in 12 at-bats (.750 batting average) — including a double and two homers — as UC San Diego went a perfect 6-0 in the USD/UCSD Co-Host Tournament. Cherry slashed .750/1.333/.778 for the week, walking four times while not striking out.
UC San Diego has won seven straight and, at 10-1, the Tritons are off to their best-ever Division I start. Next up, UC San Diego heads east to take place in the prestigious Mary Nutter Classic later this week in Cathedral City. First up, the Tritons will face Cal and California Baptist on Thursday.
