LA JOLLA, Calif. – Kristin Jones '04 was named Big West Coach of the Year, headlining a group of nine UC San Diego women's soccer scholar-athletes recognized with All-Big West honors as the conference announced its postseason awards ahead of the Big West Championship. The Tritons collected three All-Big West Second Team selections, six honorable mentions, and one All-Rookie Team selection.
Jones earned Coach of the Year honors after leading UC San Diego to its most successful season of the Division I era. In her eighth season at the helm, Jones led the Tritons to an 11-3-5 overall record and a 7-1-3 mark in Big West play, earning the No. 2 seed in the Big West Championship. A 2004 UC San Diego graduate, Jones has been part of the program's coaching staff since completing her playing career.
Under Jones, the Tritons established Division I program records for most wins and most goals in a single season. For the first time in program history during the Division I era, UC San Diego earned a postseason berth and will host a postseason match.
Jones' impact on the program has been felt throughout the team, particularly by captains
Leilah Raad and
Alexis Nguyen, who credited her passion, commitment, and belief in the group as driving forces behind the Tritons' historic season.
"Jonesy is one of the most passionate and dedicated coaches I have ever played for, which has been at the forefront of our success this season and stems from her love for this program. This year has truly been a culmination of all her commitment to growth in our D1 era. Jonesy has made it a priority to keep us all very present and in the moment this season, which I think has been a huge key to our success and has somewhat become part of our identity. She has built a foundation of hard work, resilience and being proud of what being a Triton means. It is so rewarding to play for a coach that from the beginning always believed in this team and every day pushes us to be the best version of ourselves," Raad said.
Nguyen echoed those sentiments, highlighting Jones' belief in the team's potential and the impact her commitment has had on the program. "One thing that really stands out about Jonesy is how much she believes in this team. She knew how much talent we had and saw an opportunity for us to do something special. Her commitment to this team and this program is something we see every single day, and it pushes us to give that same effort in return. I think her confidence in us played a huge role in our success this season. Making our first Division I postseason is such a big moment for our program, and I think it says a lot about the impact she's had on this team," Nguyen said.
