LA JOLLA, Calif. — UC San Diego's
Landon Akerstrom was named the Big West Men's Water Polo Player of the Week Wednesday.
A senior utility, Akerstrom led the 10th-ranked Tritons to a huge Big West road win at No. 7 Long Beach State last week. He racked up a season-high five points with four goals and an assist and tacked on a steal as well. His goal with 2:38 remaining in the game proved to be the game-winner against the Big West preseason favorite.
It was Akerstrom's third game back in action after sitting out since September of 2025 due to injury.
A native of Costa Mesa, Calif., Akerstrom was selected to the 2026 Big West Preseason Coaches' Team.Â
It is the second career Big West Player of the Week honor for Akerstrom (10/16/24). Â
After playing its last four games away from La Jolla, the Tritons, who jumped up to No. 8 in today's national poll, return to campus for a pair of matches this week. On Friday, October 16, 14th-ranked UC Santa Barbara comes in for a Big West game (6 p.m.). The next day, Concordia University Irvine visits Canyonview Aquatic Center for a 12 p.m. matinee.
