Tritons Finish the Weekend 2-0

LA JOLLA, Calif. – UC San Diego took their second win this weekend topping Pomona-Pitzer 5-2 Saturday afternoon, coming off a Friday night win against Wofford. The Tritons clinched the doubles match at No. 2 and 3, then dropped a point due to injury before earning their next point. The Sagehens made it 2-2 with a win at No. 1 before the Tritons straight-set swept the remaining 3 singles matches.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Tritons earned the doubles point with wins from Andrew Beceiro and Oliver Worth at No. 3 and Abhinav Chunduru and Trevor Ngyuen at No. 2. Freshman Beceiro and grad student worth finished first 6-1. A. Chunduru and Nguyen, both freshmen, claimed their court next, 6-4. This left No. 1 Zach Pellouchoud and Prathinav Chunduru unfinished; they were trailing 4-5.
 
The Sagehens earned the next point at No. 6 due to a Triton injury. The Sagehens then took the lead at No. 1 3-6, 2-6 in favor of Pomona-Pitzer.
 
This lead did not last long as David Adamson took his court, No. 5, 6-3, 6-2. The Tritons followed by taking the remaining three courts, starting with Pellouchoud at No. 2, 6-3, 6-1. A. Chunduru clinched the match at No. 4 with a come from behind second set, finishing 6-1, 6-4. P. Chunduru finished just after his brother on No. 3, 6-3, 6-1 to end the match.
 
TRITON TIDBITS
  • This is the third match A. Chunduru has clinched for the Tritons this season.
  • This is the Tritons first match and win against the Sagehens.
 
QUOTABLE
"This team was mentally prepared and did not take the match lightly. We had a good start with doubles but went down quickly with an injury in the first few games Yaron played," head coach Timmer Willing stated. "We maintained focus though and stayed within our skill set leading to the win."
 
UP NEXT
The Tritons will travel for their next six matches. They start the road trip in Moscow, Idaho to face the Idaho Vandals and UTRGV Vaqueros. On Saturday, Feb. 15 they face Idaho and Sunday, Feb. 16 they battle UTRGV.
