Tritons Take Down Terriers

LA JOLLA, Calif. – UC San Diego improves to 3-3 as they topped Wofford in a lengthy 5-2 match. The Tritons started strongly taking the doubles set, then took two more points before dropping one to the Terriers. Abhinav Chunduru clinched the match at No. 4, and the two remaining courts played the match out.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
UC San Diego captured the doubles point with a victory at No. 2 and 3. A. Chunduru and Trevor Ngyuen took their match quickly, topping their opponents 6-1. To clinch the point, Oliver Worth and Andrew Beceiro took No. 3 6-3. This left No. 1 Zach Pellouchoud and Prathinav Chunduru unfinished where they led 5-4.
 
Pellouchoud earned the Tritons' next point at No. 2, playing one court up than he has in the previous three home matches. He took his court in three sets, 6-3, 6-1, 6-1. Worth finished next in a straight set victory 6-2, 7-6(4). At No. 6 the Terriers captured their first point, 6-2, 3-6, 6-3 in favor of Wofford. A. Chunduru then clinched the match for the Tritons 6-2, 6-3, 6-2. David Adamson on No. 5 played out his court to capture a comeback win, 7-6(7), 7-5, 11-9. Finally, the Terriers earned their second point on No. 3 after a back-and-forth battle between P. Chunduru and his opponent, 6-3, 4-6, 6-4 in favor of Wofford.

  • Five of six singles matches went to three sets.
  • This is the second match A. Chunduru has clinched for the Tritons this season.
QUOTABLE
 Head coach Timmer Willing states, "We had a tough battle with a strong athletic team. We came away with some wins that came down to thrd sets. We learned more about ourselves and what we can improve on. We need to rebound sooner so we can build our momentum even after disappointing moments."
 
UP NEXT
After tomorrows home match against Pomona-Pitzer, the Tritons will travel for their next six matches. They start the road trip in Moscow, Idaho to face the Idaho Vandals and UTRGV Vaqueros. On Saturday, Feb. 15 they face Idaho and Sunday, Feb. 16 they battle UTRGV.
