Tritons Blank Grand Canyon in Saturday Exhibition

UC San Diego opens its season Aug. 14 at home vs. Cal

CHULA VISTA, Calif. – UC San Diego redshirt freshman Ava Tibor scored a goal in the 19th minute and the Tritons made that hold up for a 1-0 women's soccer victory over Grand Canyon in an exhibition contest Saturday morning at Chula Vista Elite Athlete Training Center. No official statistics were kept for the match, which was played in front of about 50 supporters. The two teams played a trio of 30-minute periods in the 2025 edition of their annual preseason meeting.

Triton junior Alexis Nguyen worked her way through a trio of GCU defenders to find Tibor in the box, assisting on what turned out to be the lone goal of the match. UC San Diego had five first timers on the pitch as action got underway, including goalkeeper Charlotte Wilfert, who made several stops over the course of 90 minutes.

"I was really pleased with our performance today, especially given that we hadn't even had an intrasquad scrimmage yet," said UC San Diego head coach Kristin Jones '04. "We took to heart all of the things we've worked on this first week of training and that showed. Today also gives us a sense of where we need to improve in the next ten days, too."

The Tritons open their 2025 campaign on Thursday, Aug. 14 when UC San Diego hosts Cal for a 7 p.m. match. Admission is free for all home matches at Triton Soccer Stadium, though parking permits are required seven days per week on the UC San Diego campus. For those unable to attend, UC San Diego will produce a live broadcast on ESPN+ with Steve Quis and Natasha Belak-Berger calling the action.
