LA JOLLA, Calif. – UC San Diego forward
Ava Tibor has been named The Big West Women's Soccer Freshman of the Week, it was announced Monday afternoon by the conference office.
Playing her first match as a Triton, Tibor scored a pair of goals in UC San Diego's season-opener against ACC foe Cal. Tibor notched the season's first goal at the 3:01 mark to give the Tritons an early lead. With her team trailing by a goal in the 50th minute, the Woodland Hills native lodged the ball free from Cal's keeper and scored on a rocket from the top of the 18 to level the score. Tibor's brace was the sixth by a Triton since UC San Diego moved to Division I in 2020.
Tibor becomes the third Triton to earn Big West Freshman of the Week accolades since UC San Diego joined the conference in 2021. Teammates
Alexis Nguyen (2023, twice) and
Allie Luo (2022) have also captured the weekly freshman honor.
UC San Diego hosts a pair of matches this week inside Triton Soccer Stadium. The Tritons welcome Northern Arizona on Thursday (7 p.m.) and UNLV for a Sunday matinee (2 p.m.). Admission to all home matches is free, though parking permits are required seven days per week on the UC San Diego campus.
