Tritons Take Opener in Hawai‘i

HONOLULU, HAWAI'I – UC San Diego softball took game one over the Rainbow Wahine on Friday night in a 4-1 result thanks to some clutch hits and another complete game from India Caldwell.

The Tritons are now 15-28 overall and 13-12 in the Big West. The Rainbow Wahine are now 29-18 overall and 15-10 in conference play.

Morgan Eng, Jaden Hill, Zara Wasserman, and Alexa DeMarse each scored in tonight's contest. Tossing her ninth complete game of the season, India Caldwell held Hawai'i scoreless for 6 innings before the home team was able to score. The right-hander tossed 4 strikeouts and forced 8 flyouts and groundouts.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Striking early, Morgan Eng slapped a single through the right side and got herself into scoring position by stealing second. A passed ball allowed her to make it to third and on a sac fly by Haley Garcia, the speedy left fielder was able to score in the opening inning.

Both teams remained scoreless through the next four innings. In the sixth, Jaden Hill became the leadoff runner on Wahine error. Zara Wasserman proceeded to knock her third home run of the season to score herself and Hill extending their lead to 3-0. Hawai'i loaded the bases twice in the bottom of the same inning with a pickoff by Lily Hermosillo at third stopping the first threat and a strikeout by India Caldwell shut the door on the second.

Alexa DeMarse was the leadoff runner in the seventh after she laced a single up the middle. Eng advanced her to second on a sac bunt and into scoring position for Garcia. The center fielder slapped a single up the middle on the first pitch of the at-bat knocking DeMarse in.

The Rainbow Wahine were able to score in the final inning, but the Tritons' insurance runs held strong as the final out was tallied.
