BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – UC San Diego (7-20, 5-6) split the opening doubleheader against host Cal State Bakersfield (13-21, 4-7) dropping the first game in extra innings (6-5) before taking the second game in five (11-3).
Getting the start in game one,
India Caldwell allowed three earned runs on nine hits, three walks, and one hit by pitch. The starter went to work for eight innings and struck out nine Roadrunners. Coming on in as relief,
Claire Adams gave up two runs on one hit and a walk. At the plate,
Haley Garcia led the Tritons in the loss going 2-for-3 with two runs batted in.
Emma Umemura scored two runs on a hit and a walk.
In game two,
Claire Adams went all five innings in the circle allowing two earned runs on five hits, seven walks, and one hit by pitch. The righthander struck out four Roadrunners and improved her record to 2-1. Going 3-for-4 at the plate,
Emma Umemura batted in three of her teammates and scored her own run.
Jaden Hill added her bat going a perfect 3-for-3 with two runs scored.
Alexa DeMarse and
Morgan Eng scored two runs of their own as well.
CAL STATE BAKERSFIELD 6, UC SAN DIEGO 5 (9 INN.)
Striking first, UC San Diego scored four unanswered runs in the top of the second and third innings.
Zara Wasserman started the inning reaching on an error by the left fielder.
Emma Umemura did the same as another error was committed and she reached first to advance Wasserman into scoring position. A sac bunt from
Elise Nishimura advanced both runners another base. The bases were loaded as
KayLeigh Coberly was walked.
Haley Garcia laced single out to right field to score Wasserman.
Morgan Eng was then hit by a pitch to knock in Umemura.
Two walks in the top of the third had
Alexis Jimenez on second and Umemura on first. Nishimura powered a single to left center to score Jimenez and advance Umemura. Garcia knocked a single up the middle to score Umemura.
Cal State Bakersfield scored four unanswered runs until the ninth inning when the Tritons scored one more to put them on top in extra innings.
The Tritons fell in the bottom of the same inning as the Runners scored two to walk it off.
UC SAN DIEGO 11, CAL STATE BAKERSFIELD 3 (5 INN.)
Opening the second game of the day with force, UC San Deigo scored five runs in the first, which they haven't done since 2023. Jiminez scored two bringing in
Alexa DeMarse and Eng. Wasserman put down a bunt to reach and knocked in another two as Jimenez and
Jaden Hill scored. Umemura knocked a single through the left side to bring in Wasserman.
UC San Diego scored three more in the second inning. Stealing her way around the bases,
Morgan Eng stole third and on a Runner error, was able to make it home to score. It was Umemura once again who scored two more as her single laced through the right side and
Samantha Womack and Hill brought the score to 8-0.
In the fourth, Garcia cracked a two-RBI double to right center to bring in
KayLeigh Coberly and Umemura, 10-1. The hosts responded with another run to making it 10-2 after four.
UC San Diego ended it in the fifth inning, scoring a run as DeMarse hit her second solo home run of the day. The Runners scored in the bottom of the inning, but Adams tallied a strikeout and forced a fly out to shut the door.
TRITON TIDBITS
- India Caldwell tossed 17.3 shutout innings before it was broken up in the fourth inning of the first game today.
- Emma Umemura returned to the starting lineup after being out for over a month, made immediate impact going 6-for-8 scoring three of her teammates and earning three runs of her own.
- UC San Diego scored five runs in the first inning of the second game which they have not done since 2023 vs. CSUN.
