LA JOLLA, Calif. – The Tritons (6-19, 4-6 Big West) suffered a 5-0 non-conference loss to the New Mexico Lobos (17-16-1, 2-4 Mountain West) at Triton Softball Field on Tuesday afternoon. Â
Haley Garcia led on the stat sheet, going 2-for-2 for a pair of singles while also collecting two stolen bases. Callie Christian started in the circle on Tuesday, pitching just over four innings where she racked up two strikeouts, three walks and seven hits. India Caldwell finished the game, striking out four while giving up one hit in a two-inning campaign.Â
HOW IT HAPPENEDÂ
Both teams struggled to get things going in the first inning as Christian struck out two Lobos to keep it scoreless. New Mexico found its footing soon after, stringing together a double and single to go up 1-0. Â
Garcia starred in the third inning, hitting a single up the middle before stealing consecutive bases to set up a tying run. The two-out deficit could not be overcome, however, as the score remained by the end of the inning. Â
Â
After a quiet fourth inning for both sides, the Lobos surged in the fifth. A hit-by-pitch opened the door for the visitors, who followed up with two singles to draw a 2-0 lead. A fielder's choice into center field sent in another run, but not without a third base putout connection from Garcia to Alexa DeMarse. Â
Another single and double were enough to make it 5-0 before the Tritons turned to the bullpen. Caldwell stopped the inning's bleeding with a strikeout, leaving three Lobos on base.Â
Garcia found herself in a familiar third base position in the sixth inning after hitting another single and riding an Eng bunt and Jaden Hill sacrifice bunt. No matter, a pop fly to second base closed the inning before she could reach the final bag.Â
