Tritons Claim Top Spot in Mid-Major Top 25® Coaches' Poll

UC San Diego ranked No. 1 for the first time

BOSTON – After winning The Big West Championship in its first try, the UC San Diego men's basketball team has moved up one spot to No. 1 in this week's Mid-Major Top 25® college basketball poll. The Tritons received 20 of 30 first place votes from participating coaches. The Tritons earned 57 votes in the Associated Press Top 25 and In the USA TODAY Sports Men's Basketball Coaches Poll, UC San Diego is receiving 37 Top 25 votes this week.
 
Last week, UC San Diego won The Big West Championship with a 75-61 victory over second seed UC Irvine. Owners of a 15-game win streak – the nation's longest active – the Tritons (30-4) earned their first NCAA Division I tournament berth. Playing as a 12 seed, the Tritons will take on Big Ten champion Michigan, a fifth seed in the South Region. The game is scheduled for 8 p.m. MDT on Thursday from Ball Arena in Denver.
 
Now in its 26th season, the Mid-Major Top 25® is voted on by 31 Division I coaches. The poll is announced every Monday. To view the final regular season poll, click here.

After two decades as one of the most successful programs in NCAA Division II, the UC San Diego intercollegiate athletics program began a new era in 2020 as a member of The Big West Conference in NCAA Division I.
