Niwa Nets Second Big West Honor in Three Weeks

Tait-Jones named Big West Player of the Week

LA JOLLA, Calif. – UC San Diego senior Aniwaniwa Tait-Jones has been voted Big West Player of the Week for the second time in the last three weeks. The honor is the third in his UC San Diego career.
 
Tait-Jones led UC San Diego to a pair of Big West wins, propelling the Tritons into a tie atop the conference standings. The New Zealand native scored 28 on 9-of-15 shooting in a 20-point home win over UC Riverside and followed that up with a 22 point, eight rebound, eight assist performance in the Tritons' 18-point win at UC Irvine – snapping UCI's 22-game home win streak and lifting UC San Diego into a first-place tie in The Big West standings.
 
For the week, Tait-Jones averaged 25 points, 7.5 rebounds and six assists per game. The nation's leader in made free throws and free throw attempts, Tait-Jones was 16-of-19 from the stripe last week (84.2%). 
 
Tait-Jones and the Tritons will play at Cal State Bakersfield on Thursday (6:30 p.m.) before returning home to host UC Davis (Saturday, 4 p.m.). Both games will air live on ESPN+. Tickets for Saturday can be purchased through Triton Box Office.

After two decades as one of the most successful programs in NCAA Division II, the UC San Diego intercollegiate athletics program began a new era in 2020 as a member of The Big West Conference in NCAA Division I.
