Tritons Sweep Dinos in Exhibition

LA JOLLA, Calif. — The UC San Diego men's tennis team took care of business on Friday afternoon with a 7-0 sweep of visiting Calgary. The exhibition victory saw the Tritons pick up straight-set wins in all six singles contests in addition to going perfect in doubles.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Doubles
Carson Lee and Diogo Tinoco got the Tritons off to a strong start with a 6-1 result on court two. The other two contests started closer as Calgary picked up break points, but Pelayo Rodriguez and Zach Pellouchoud were still able to pull away for a 6-2 victory on No. 1. At No. 3, Robert Freedman and David Adamson broke a 4-all score open to win 6-4.

Singles
Adamson won his first set 6-3 on court five before his opponent retired early in the second set. Freedman then put the Tritons up 3-0 in the dual match with a perfect 6-0, 6-0 showing on No. 6. The match was subsequently locked up on court one with a near-perfect 6-1, 6-1 result for Lee.

The remaining three matches were still completed despite UC San Diego clinching the dual match. Pellouchoud finished next at No. 4, cruising as well to a 6-1, 6-0 victory. Rodriguez handled his opponent 6-0, 6-2 on court three before the closest match of singles play concluded at No. 2. There, Tinoco ultimately prevailed 6-3, 6-4.

QUOTABLE
"I thought today was a good day because we had the pressure to win," head coach Timmer Willing said. "We were expected to win, and sometimes that is not an easy thing to do. One thing we did learn as a young team is when we are in that situation, and we are not being very disciplined on some things, that can get a little sloppy. We fell into that trap a little bit, but we learned from it and recovered in singles and made sure we focused and did what we needed to do."

TRITON TIDBITS
  • Junior Zach Pellouchoud is a dual American-Canadian citizen and described the opportunity to play a Canadian side as a privilege.
  • Friday was the first time the men's tennis program welcomed an international opponent for a match. Calgary's women's team also made the trip, with the UC San Diego women victorious earlier on Friday in that contest.
UP NEXT
The Tritons now embark on a six-match road trip that begins next weekend in Northern California. Matches will be played at Santa Clara, Pacific and Sacramento State Jan. 31-Feb. 2. The Santa Clara Broncos are up first on Friday, Jan. 31, at 3:00 p.m. from the Degheri Tennis Center.
