Haynes Wins Again but Tritons Fall at GCU

PHOENIX – For the second straight day, first-year Triton Julia Haynes was victorious at No. 1 singles, but the Tritons dropped their third match of the weekend, falling 6-1 at Grand Canyon Sunday morning at GCU Tennis Facility. Haynes downed GCU's Karina Hofbauer in three sets on court one. In doubles action, Haynes and senior Naomi Nguyen were winners at No. 1, but the 'Lopes earned the doubles point.
 
The match was UC San Diego's third in a 48-hour span in Arizona; Sunday was GCU's spring season opener.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Haynes and Nguyen got things started in the win column for the Tritons, earning a 6-4 result over GCU's Hofbauer and Dania Deaifi at No. 1. Grand Canyon rallied to win the doubles point with victories at No. 2 and No. 3.
 
In singles action, the 'Lopes clinched the match with wins on courts three (by retirement), two, and four. Meantime, after dropping her first set 6-1, Haynes responded by taking the second set, 6-4, and winning the super tie break 10-7 to claim the victory.
 
At No. 5, UC San Diego senior Adriana Tabares won her first set, 6-1, before dropping the next two, 6-4, 6-3. On court six, senior Kelly Leung played singles for the first time this spring, battling in a 7-5, 7-6 (4) defeat.

"We took this one on the chin," said UC San Diego head coach Sebastian Bader. "It was a match we came to win but we couldn't get it done on too many courts. I wish we could've wrapped up the trip with a win, but GCU's play deserved it more today."

TRITON TIDBITS
  • Julia Haynes and Naomi Nguyen teamed up for their first win of the spring at No. 1 doubles. Nguyen is the program's all-time leader in Division I doubles wins with 33.
  • Kelly Leung saw her first singles action of the spring, playing on court six.
 
UP NEXT
UC San plays on Northview Tennis Courts for the first time this spring on Friday, when the Tritons host Calgary in an exhibition match. First serve is scheduled for 10 a.m. in La Jolla.
