LA JOLLA, Calif. — The first home men's tennis match of the season for UC San Diego ended with a perfect 7-0 victory over Point Loma on Friday. The Tritons (1-2) took the doubles point in two matches and swept through singles play with straight-set victories in five of the six contests.
Â
Freshmen
David Adamson and
Robert Freedman made their home dual match debuts at Northview Tennis Courts and clinched the doubles point together with a 6-3 victory on court three. Both players then went on to win their singles matches.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Doubles
Pelayo Rodriguez and
Zach Pellouchoud were tied 3-3 at No. 1 doubles before winning the final three games en route to a 6-3 victory. Adamson and Freedman fell behind early at No. 3 doubles but used two breaks to win four-straight games for a 6-3 victory of their own.
Â
With the doubles point secured, the No. 2 contest went unfinished. Nothing separated the two teams in that match, which was knotted at 4-all at the point of interruption.
Â
Singles
Adamson continued his momentum into singles play, becoming the first Triton to pick up a victory with a comfortable 6-2, 6-3 win in the No. 5 position. He was followed by
Diogo Tinoco at No. 2 singles, who blew a tight contest wide open with a 6-4, 6-1 result.
Â
Pelayo Rodriguez then clinched the dual match at No. 3 singles. The senior had the opposite trajectory as Tinoco, winning big in set one (6-0) before having a closer finish in set two (6-4).
Â
The two teams played out the rest of the singles matches, which allowed
Carson Lee to complete his comeback on court one in the only three-set contest of the dual match. The sophomore lost set one by a break, 3-6, but bounced back by winning 12 of 15 games across sets two and three for a 3-6, 6-1, 6-2 victory.
Â
The two remaining matches were also the two that needed tiebreakers to decide different sets. Freedman won set one 6-0 before the second set of his No. 6 singles contest went the distance. He won the tiebreaker 7-3 after winning the final four points of the match.
Â
Pellouchoud also had a strong end to a tiebreaker in the first set on court four. He trailed 2-4 but won five of the final six points, including three break points, to win 7-5. The junior then rode his momentum to a 6-2 set two victory to round out the dual match for the Tritons.
Â
QUOTABLE
"Our guys did a good job today, it was a good match," head coach
Timmer Willing said. "Point Loma came out ready for us in doubles. We knew they were a strong team, so to manage to get that doubles point after the way they came out was excellent. That set the tone for the rest of the match. Our guys remained calm, did not press and stayed within focus of what they needed to do. I have been extremely happy with what we have accomplished at this point in the season and I loved the mentality of how we approached this match."
