LA JOLLA, Calif. – On the final day of action at UC San Diego's BladeRunner, men's foil
Jacob Levy captured UC San Diego's lone championship of the weekend Sunday. The annual fencing tournament, held at LionTree Arena, saw another three Tritons make it into the top 20.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Men's Foil
All five Tritons recorded winning records in the seeding round, with
Henry Liang and
Scott Lao going 5-6 for the 4th and 9th seed, respectively.
It was 20th-seed
Jacob Levy, however, who ripped through the competition in the elimination round. The junior bested teammates Liang and Lao on his way to the championship duel, where he claimed the Triton's first gold of the weekend with a 15-11 scoreline.
Lao finished tied for third and Liang slotted into 11th place.
Men's Saber
Arnav Raja led the Triton effort with a 5-6 record good enough for the seventh seed; his loss in the Round of 32 placed him at 19th place.
In similar fashion to Levy, 43rd-seed
Hananiah So went furthest for the blue and gold. After avenging
Daniel Noble to advance to the Round of 16, So came back from the brink but could not secure a victory, falling into 15th place.
QUOTABLE
"Overall, of the six squads that we have, it's good, it's balanced," said UC San Diego head coach
Juan Ignacio Calderon. "I'm very optimistic for the West Invitational, and that's the message the team is going to get: to really go there to do one of our best performances in the last few years because precisely we are hosting, and we have the full strength of the team."
UP NEXT
The Tritons continue their 2024-25 season in San Diego for the West Invitational on Nov. 2 and 3. Last year, the women went 4-6 and the men went 4-5.
