OREM, Utah – On the road at Utah Valley, UC San Diego men's soccer fell to the Wolverines in a 3-1 decision, scoring all three goals due to Triton fouls.
The Tritons are now 0-3-0 and Utah Valley moves to 2-0-1.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Host, Utah Valley struck early in the first half after a Triton foul allowed a set piece off a free kick in the 19th minute. UC San Diego was unable to get a shot off in the first half while the Wolverines took four shots.
In the second half, the score remained 1-0 until the 70th minute when a penalty in the box against the Tritons forced a penalty kick. UVU extended their lead to 2-0 nothing. The Tritons were able to spoil the clean sheet the following minute when a handball penalty against the Wolverines awarded the Tritons their own penalty kick.
Jonah Kawamura cut the deficit as he netted the Triton's first penalty kick of the season.
UVU pulled away again in the final minutes when a free kick ricocheted of the cross bar and was buried on the rebound. The Tritons were unable to draw even before time ran out on the clock.
TRITON TIDBITS
- This is the first meeting for the two squads. UVU now leads the all-time series at 1-0.
- UC San Diego is the third Big West member the Wolverines have faced so far this season.
- Jonah Kawamura scored the first penalty kick of the season in the 71st minute.
- Woody Brown tallied his first yellow card of his college career in the 85th minute.
- Seven yellow cards were dealt between the two squads with the Tritons earning four.
