Four Tritons Named to Academic All-District Team

Costello, Dalquist, Rosengard and Sudyka recognized for academic achievements

LA JOLLA, Calif.—UC San Diego baseball had four scholar-athletes named to the College Sports Communicators (CSC) Academic All-District Team, as announced Tuesday by the organization. Nick Costello, Matthew Dalquist, Benjamin Rosengard and Noah Sudyka were all recognized for their achievements in the classroom and on the playing field.
 
The Tritons have now had six scholar-athletes recognized with Academic All-District distinction in the Division I era. UC San Diego baseball has had 20 Academic All-District awardees and four Academic All-Americans all-time.

UC San Diego was one of two Big West institutions with four honorees, leading the conference along with CSUN. The Tritons also had the most scholar-athletes recognized of any school in the UC system, followed by UC Irvine (3), UC Santa Barbara (2) and UCLA (2).

NICK COSTELLO | JR | HUMAN DEVELOPMENTAL SCIENCES
Costello (Pleasanton, Calif.) is a junior, majoring in human developmental sciences with a 3.51 grade point average at Sixth College. It is the first CSC Academic All-District honor for Costello, who was also named to the Big West Spring All-Academic Team and Big West Commissioner's Honor Roll, Highest Honors as a sophomore in 2023.
 
A 2024 All-Big West Honorable Mention, Costello ranked eighth in the conference with a .464 on base percentage. He led the team in home runs (10) and runs scored (49), which ranked seventh and eighth in the Big West respectively. Costello was the only Triton to appear in all 53 games this season, making 50 starts in right field. 
 
Costello also ranked second in the Big West in walks (51), sixth in hit by pitch (18) and eighth in stolen bases (13). He finished the season with a .247 batting average, 42 hits and 32 RBI for the Tritons.
 
MATTHEW DALQUIST | R-SO | DATA SCIENCE
Dalquist (Redondo Beach, Calif.) is a redshirt sophomore, majoring in data science with a 3.87 grade point average at Warren College. He was also named to the Big West Commissioner's Honor Roll, Highest Honors in 2023 but did not play due to injury.
 
The right-hander appeared in 14 games, making 13 starts on the mound and finishing with a 6-3 record. He was second on the team with 68 strikeouts in 72.2 innings pitched and finished with a 4.71 earned run average. Dalquist ranked second in the Big West in fewest walks allowed (17), ninth in wins, 11th in batters struck out looking (20), 14th in strikeouts.
 
BENJAMIN ROSENGARD | GR | INTERNATIONAL AFFAIRS
Rosengard (Chicago, Il.) is a graduate student, earning his master's degree in international affairs with a 3.71 grade point average. He earned his undergraduate degree at Rice in 2023 where he was a two-time Conference USA Commissioner's Honor Roll awardee.
 
Rosengard appeared in 50 games, making 45 starts in the infield, primarily at third base. He was fourth on the team with a .284 average, finishing second in hits (50) and fifth in runs scored (26) and RBI (27). Rosengard was a perfect 7-for-7 in stolen bases, third-most on the team. He was exceptional on defense with a perfect 1.000 fielding percentage, recording 41 putouts, 98 assists in 139 chances with 10 double plays and no errors. 
 
NOAH SUDYKA | SR | REAL ESTATE AND DEVELOPMENT
Sudyka (Aliso Viejo, Calif.) is a senior, majoring in real estate and development with a 3.55 grade point average at Sixth College. Sudyka is a two-time Big West Spring All-Academic Team honoree and two-time Big West Commissioner's Honor Roll member in both 2022 and 2023.
 
Sudyka appeared in 48 games, making 47 starts at shortstop and finished with a .255 batting average and 38 hits for the Tritons. The senior ranked second on the team in walks (23), fourth in RBI (30), fourth in home runs (4) and fifth in slugging percentage (.409). An anchor of the Triton defense, Sudyka finished with a .989 fielding percentage, recording 68 putouts and 119 assists in 189 chances with 19 double plays.
 
The 2024 Academic All-District Baseball Team, selected by College Sports Communicators, recognizes the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performances on the field and in the classroom. The CSC Academic All-America program separately recognizes baseball honorees in four divisions—NCAA Division I, NCAA Division II, NCAA Division III and NAIA.
 
To be eligible, student-athletes must hold a minimum 3.50 cumulative grade point average, must have sophomore standing both academically and athletically, as well as participated in 90 percent of the team's contests or started 66 percent of games. For pitchers, eligible nominees need to pitch 25-plus innings or appear in 17 games as a pitcher.
