SAN DIEGO—UC San Diego baseball dropped a 3-2 decision to San Diego State on Tuesday evening at Tony Gwynn Stadium. The Tritons (28-22) moved to 0-2 in the season series with the Aztecs (16-35) and 7-7 in Division I meetings.
Â
Emiliano Gonzalez drove in the only runs of the evening for the Tritons, finishing 2-for-4 with a double and two RBI.
Benjamin Rosengard also knocked a double, while
Anthony Potestio had the other hit in the contest. Potestio and
Nick Costello represented the two runs scored for UC San Diego.
Â
Starter
Landon Marchetti (2-3) was credited with the loss, pitching 2.0 innings and allowing two runs on six hits with no walks and three strikeouts.
Sam Hasegawa pitched 2.0 clean innings out of the bullpen, giving up just one hit with no walks and one strikeout, and
Julian Custer went 1.1 innings without allowing a hit, issuing one walk and collecting one strikeout.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
After Marchetti retired the Aztecs in order in the first, SDSU got on the board in the second after loading the bases with one out. An RBI single brought in the first run for San Diego State, but a strikeout and a line-out to
Noah Sudyka at shortstop limited the damage to 1-0.
Â
An inning later, the Aztecs added to their lead with an RBI double to make it 2-0.
Spencer Seid entered out of the bullpen and recorded three consecutive outs to hold SDSU to a single run once again. Â
Â
The Tritons brought the minimum to the plate in the first four innings, with a two-out single by Potestio in the first representing the only hit.
Â
UC San Diego rallied in the top of the fifth, getting the first two runners on base with no outs. However, a pair of fly-outs and a fielder's choice ended the inning without a run for the Tritons. San Diego State added to its lead once again in the bottom of the inning with an RBI double to pull in front, 3-0.
Â
In the top of the sixth the Tritons finally broke through, putting two on with two outs. Gonzalez sent a ball to the wall in left field to bring in both runners and pull UC San Diego within one.
Â
Custer and Hasegawa combined to limit San Diego State to just one base runner in the final three frames and give the Tritons a chance at the comeback.
Â
Rosengard knocked a two-out double in the top of the seventh, but the Tritons were retired in order the rest of the way in the 3-2 loss.
