LA JOLLA, Calif. – UC San Diego senior
Tyler McGhie was named Big West Men's Basketball Player of the Week by the conference office on Monday afternoon. The honor is a first for McGhie, who helped lead the Tritons to three wins in three days to
claim the Boardwalk Battle title in Daytona Beach, Fla.
McGhie averaged 21 points on 4.3 made threes per game and dished out 4.3 assists with just one turnover as UC San Diego won three games in three days to claim the inaugural Boardwalk Battle championship. McGhie was named the tournament's Most Valuable Player. In the opening game, he set a new Division I career high with 27 points scored in a win over La Salle. In the championship game – an 80-45 rout of four-time MAC champion Toledo – McGhie scored 27 more and was 7-for-11 in three-point field goal tries.
The Big West honor is the first of McGhie's career. He becomes the fourth Triton to earn this weekly award. In addition to
Bryce Pope (three times) and
Aniwaniwa Tait-Jones last season,
Toni Rocak was recognized twice in the 2021-22 season.
Winners of three in a row, UC San Diego (5-2) is back at LionTree Arena to host La Verne on Saturday at 4 p.m. Big West play begins Dec. 5 at UC Santa Barbara.
