Cross Country Heads to West Region Championships

LA JOLLA, Calif. – UC San Diego cross country will make their debut at the NCAA Division I West Region Championships on Friday, Nov. 15. The Triton women will start the day at 11 a.m. running a 6K and will be followed by the men at 12 p.m. for the 10K.

The Tritons are familiar with the course after running it earlier this season at the WSU Cougar Classic in September. The Triton women will run the same course for the 6K while the Triton men will add an extra lap to their course for a 10K. In September, Sylvana Northrop led the women to a fourth-place team finish with a time of 20:41.7. The senior took sixth place in the field of 100 runners. On the men's side, Charlie Frank, Zeno Castiglioni, and Jordan Haney led the Tritons to an 8th place team finish.

ABOUT THE COACHES
Head Coach Nate Garcia '00 is entering his 18th year as head coach of UC San Diego's cross country program and his 27th season as a Triton, having been a four-year scholar-athlete and serving five years as an assistant coach. Since his promotion to head coach ahead of the 2007 season, the Tritons made seven appearances at the NCAA Division II Championships. He is joined by Meriah Earle, who is back for her third season with the team. To learn more about coach Earle, click here.

WHY THE TRITONS?
The Triton is described as the offspring of Poseidon and Amphitrite, a demigod of the sea with a lower part of the body like that of a fish. It is known as a mighty and fierce sea warrior. Given UC San Diego's proximity to the Pacific Ocean and its connections with the world-famous Scripps Institution of Oceanography, the Triton became our mascot in 1964.
