LA JOLLA, Calif. – Returning home to Triton Soccer Stadium, UC San Diego men's soccer defeated visiting Sacramento State in a 2-0 result on Saturday night.
UC San Diego evens out to 2-2 in Big West play and 3-6-4 overall. The Hornets move to 1-3 and 4-7-2 overall.
HOW IT HAPPENED
UC San Diego's
Max Carvalho was searching for an early go-ahead goal in the first minutes of the contest with four shots already fired in the first 14 minutes of play. He found the back of the net in the 16th minute when
Quinn Sellers changed the side of the pitch to
Cole Barrett on the right-hand side of the box. Barrett then crossed the ball to the back post and Carvalho's header went down and in.
After the first half, the Tritons remained in the lead on that lone goal despite the shot difference being 7-2 for the gold and blue. The Hornets' keeper made three saves in the first half and
Nolan Premack made one for UC San Diego. The Tritons gave up three free kicks due to offsides and the Hornets earned two corner kicks in the first half.
In the second 45, Sac State fired 11 shots with two on goal as they searched for the equalizer. Forcing seven corner kicks, the Hornets were unable to convert against Premack and the Triton defense. The Tritons took nine shots and managed to put three on goal.
Woody Brown found success at the top of the box in the 87th minute when Sellers found his freshman teammate undefended just outside the 18.
The insurance goal paired with the UC San Diego defense propelled the gold and blue to their second Big West win this season.
