LA JOLLA, Calif.—UC San Diego women's volleyball fell to Navy, 3-0, on Friday evening in LionTree Arena on day two of the UC San Diego Invitational. The Tritons (4-4) dropped straight sets, 25-22, 25-19, 25-19, to Navy (7-1).
Lauren Brooker led the Tritons with seven kills, while
Emily McDaniel and
Reagan McWhinney added five apiece. McDaniel and
Jasmine Saran recorded four blocks each, while
Natalie Repetti tallied a team-best 11 digs.
Nevada Knowles finished one dig shy of a double-double with 12 assists and nine digs.
Zaria Henderson recorded four service aces.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Tritons took an early 7-2 lead in the opening set before Navy put together a 5-1 scoring run to close the gap. With UC San Diego leading 9-7, Navy put together another run of 7-1 to take the lead 14-10. The Tritons closed back within one, 20-19, behind two aces by Henderson. Navy closed out the set with back-to-back points to take the opening frame, 25-22.
Navy carried the momentum into the second set, taking an early 8-3 lead. Midway through the set, UC San Diego used a four-point run to pull back within one, 13-12. Navy answered with a 4-0 run of its own to lead, 17-12. The Tritons kept things close down the stretch, but Navy took the second set, 25-19.
Once again, Navy jumped out to an early lead, 8-3, in the third set and built a comfortable 20-12 advantage late. At 24-16, the Tritons fought off three match points but eventually fell, 25-19.
TRITON TIDBITS
- The Tritons were held to their lowest hitting percentage of the season (.079), while Navy hit .175 as a team.
- It was the first time in her young career that Lauren Brooker led all Tritons scorers.
- With the loss, UC San Diego moved to 0-11 in the all-time series with Navy.
