Tritons Fall to Rainbow Wahine

UC San Diego dropped a 3-0 decision to Hawai‘i

LA JOLLA, Calif.—UC San Diego women's volleyball fell to Hawai'i in three sets on Saturday evening in LionTree Arena. The Tritons (8-8, 0-4 Big West) fell to the Rainbow Wahine (10-5, 3-1 Big West) by set scores of 18-25, 13-25, 17-25.
 
Ava McInnes led the offense with 11 kills and added seven digs. Lauren Brooker chipped in six kills and six digs, while leading the team in assists (19) and aces (2). Defensively, Jasmine Saran collected a team-best two blocks, while Natalie Repetti recorded 16 digs. 
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
The teams traded points to a 10-9 Hawai'i advantage in the opening set before the Tritons went on a three-point run to jump in front, 12-10. UH responded with a five-point run of its own, but three kills by McInnes and a block from Emily McDaniel and McInnes gave the Tritons the advantage again, 16-15. The Rainbow Wahine then outscored UC San Diego 10-2 to close out the set, 25-18. 
 
Hawai'i carried the momentum into the second set, taking an early 9-4 lead. The Tritons put together a mini run but the 'Bows extended their lead, 13-7. UC San Diego continued to battle but UH maintained control of the set the rest of the way, taking a two-set lead in the match.
 
 The Tritons came out of the intermission with renewed energy, building a quick 6-3 lead. UH closed the gap to a 7-7 tie before the Tritons created separation again, 10-7. With UC San Diego leading, 15-14, the Rainbow Wahine put together a 11-2 scoring run to close out the set, 25-17, and take the match, 3-0.
 
TRITON TIDBITS
  • Hawai'i held the advantage in aces (7-2), blocks (5-3) and digs (47-38). The Tritons hit .190 as a team compared to .388 for the Rainbow Wahine.
  • The 1,806 in attendance at LionTree Arena is the third largest crowd in program history. 
  • With the loss, the Tritons moved to 0-6 in the all-time series with Hawai'i.

UC San Diego will hit the road for a pair of matches next weekend, traveling to take on CSUN on Friday and Cal State Bakersfield on Saturday. Both matches will be broadcast on ESPN+ with live statistics available via UCSDTritons.com.
