Seniors Lead at Cross Country Season Opener

BREA, Calif. – The UC San Diego cross country squads opened the 2023 season on Saturday, Sept. 2 at the annual Mark Covert Classic hosted by Cal State Fullerton.
 
The men's team finished fifth with 147 points and the women finishing sixth with 161 points.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
Picking up where he left off in 2022, Jordan Haney led the Tritons on the men's side. The four Tritons following Haney, finished all within the 26th minute with 20 seconds between one another.
 
Haney ran a team-best 25:04.7 to finish 18th in the 137 runner-field.
 
Following Haney were Michael Julian in 34th, Ian Gerth in 39th, Nicoo Pompili in 42nd, Tate Meaux in 52nd, Evan Hild in 66th, Andrew Schulz in 67th, and Thomas Fry in 95th.
 
This was Meaux's collegiate debut.
 
On the women's side, Isabelle Shepherd led the group. Seven Tritons followed, all finishing in the 20th minute from the sixth second to the 53rd.
 
Shepherd finished 23rd with a team-best time of 18:38.4 in the 118 runner-field.
 
Emma Dunmire, Stella Gladden, Norah Dulaney, Jenna Satovsky, Kimberly Willard, Michelle Huerta, and Lauren Delgado took 37th, 38th, 40th, 41st, 45th, 52nd, and 58th. Lauren Lapporte took 60th with Meilani Castillo in 80th and Roxanne Ehrig in 83rd.
 
Dulaney, Willard, Huerta, Castillo, and Ehrig made their collegiate debuts today with transfer Gladden making her UC San Diego debut.
 
QUOTABLE
"Today was a solid start to our season," said head coach Nate Garcia '00, "Senior captains Jordan Haney and Isabelle Shepherd led the way for us and showed great leadership."
 
Commenting on the race he said, "Throughout both races we saw great pack racing. While the score was a little higher than we would have liked we have a lot to work with and great room for growth in the coming weeks." He added,  "it was fun to get back out there and Cal State Fullerton hosted a great meet."
