Tritons Split Day Two in Indianapolis

UC San Diego defeated Kent State, 3-1, and fell to Butler, 3-2

INDIANAPOLIS—UC San Diego women's volleyball went 1-1 on day two of the Bulldog Brawl to wrap up the road trip in Indianapolis. The Tritons (2-1) defeated Kent State (0-2) in the morning match, 3-1, and fell in a tightly contested five-setter with the home team Butler (3-0).
 
Ava McInnes collected 28 kills in two matches to lead the Tritons offensively, while Emily McDaniel added 19 and Lauren Brooker and Zaria Henderson added 16 apiece. Natalie Repetti collected 45 digs to lead the defense and McDaniel collected 15 blocks in nine sets to average 1.67 per set.
 
UC SAN DIEGO 3, KENT STATE 1
The Tritons took the morning game in four sets (25-15, 25-19, 18-25, 25-21) over Kent State. McInnes led the way with 11 kills and McDaniel was just behind her with 10, with both Tritons totaling 14.5 points in the set. Brooker finished just shy of a triple-double for the second consecutive match with 15 assists, 10 digs and nine kills. 
 
Repetti collected a career-high 30 digs and matched her career high with three aces. Zaria Henderson also tallied double figure digs (12) and Nevada Knowles finished with 15 assists and nine digs. 
 
UC San Diego hit .141 in the match compared to .077 for the Golden Flashes and tallied nine aces to KSU's five. The Tritons continued to dominate defensively at the net with 14.0 team blocks in the contest.
 
UC SAN DIEGO 2, BUTLER 3
The second match of the day came down to the wire, 25-8, 17-25, 25-20, 18-25, 13-15, with the Tritons suffering their first loss of the season. UC San Diego held a 10-4 lead in the fifth set before Butler rallied with an 11-3 run to close out the set and take the match.
 
McInnes led the offense for the third consecutive match, finishing with 17 kills and 21.5 points. McDaniel collected a team-high seven blocks and added nine kills to finish second on the team with 12.5 points. Brooker led the back court with 17 digs and added 26 assists for her third double-double in as many collegiate starts.  
 
The Tritons began the match hitting .471 (10-2-17) in the opening set, but closed out the set hitting -.130 in the final frame. UC San Diego held the slight advantage in match hitting percentage (.163 to .160), and the advantage in aces, 10-6, while the teams were even with 10 blocks apiece.

  • Natalie Repetti recorded a career-high 30 digs against Kent State in the early match.
  • Freshman Lauren Brooker has recorded a double-double in all three of her collegiate starts.

The Tritons will continue their nonconference schedule on the road for a two-day tournament hosted by Gonzaga in Spokane, Wash. UC San Diego will face Air Force (10 a.m. PT) and Idaho (3 p.m. PT) on Friday and take on the host Gonzaga on Saturday at 6 p.m. PT.
