Fuhrman Secures Walk-Off Victory in Opener with UC Davis

UC San Diego defeated UC Davis, 5-4, on Thursday evening

LA JOLLA, Calif.—Michael Fuhrman hit a walk-off RBI double in the ninth inning to propel UC San Diego baseball over UC Davis, 5-4, on Thursday evening in Triton Ballpark. The Tritons (18-9, 8-2 Big West) took the series opener with the Aggies (10-15, 3-7 Big West) to improve to 5-3 in the Division I series.

Emiliano Gonzalez and Brock Kleszcz both finished 2-for-4 with a run scored, while Noah Sudyka went 1-for-3 with a triple, two RBI and a run scored.

Izaak Martinez (3-0) earned the victory, while Ryan Forcucci turned in an impressive 3.2 shutout innings in relief, allowing one hit and collecting eight strikeouts.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Tritons got on the board quick when Matt Halbach brought in Patrick Hackworth with an RBI ground-out in the bottom of the first. UC San Diego added to its lead an inning later when Sudyka tripled down the right field line to bring in two more to make it 3-0.

UC Davis got a run back in the top of the third and scored three more in the fifth to take the lead 4-3. An inning later, Luke Saunders hit a fly ball to right field that was dropped, allowing Gonzalez to score and tie the game at 4-4.

After coming in from the bullpen in the bottom of the fifth, Forcucci held the Aggies scoreless through his 3.2 innings of work including striking out the side in the seventh.

The Tritons threatened to take the lead in the bottom of the seventh with two runners on, but were unable to bring a run home.

Martinez came in with two runners on and one out in the top of the ninth, but forced a fly-out and a ground-out to keep the game knotted and give the Tritons a chance at the walk-off.

Sudyka drew a leadoff walk and Hackworth advanced him to second on a sac-bunt to bring up Fuhrman with one out. The Tritons' second baseman hit a booming double to the fence in left center field on a 2-1 pitch to bring in Sudyka for the walk-off victory.
