Season Comes to an End in Utah

PROVO, Utah - The season came to an end Saturday for the UC San Diego men's golf team as the Tritons wrapped up play at the 58th PING Cougar Classic.

UC San Diego placed 14th and Davis McDowell was the top Triton, tying for 17th.

BYU hosted the two-day, 54-hole event at Riverside Country Club in Provo.

HOW IT HAPPENED
UC San Diego finished 12-under par with a three-round score of 876. The Tritons shot a 289 (+1) in Saturday's third round, their best of the tournament. Friday, they turned in rounds of 291 and 296. The Tritons jumped up a spot in the standings today as they were tied for 15th after Friday's play.

McDowell finished six-under with a total of 210. He carded rounds of 67, 72, and 71. The redshirt sophomore has now been UC San Diego's top finisher in seven of the team's 11 tournaments this season.

BYU, ranked 44th in the country, won the event for the seventh time in the last nine years. The Cougars were 40-under with an 824. They had rounds of 273, 270, and 281. Second-place Utah Valley was eight strokes back, while third-place CSUN was 19 strokes behind.

The individual medalist was Max Charles from Boise State. He fired rounds of 68, 63, and 66 to finish with a 19-under par 197. Elijah Turner from BYU and Caden Weber from Utah Valley tied for second, each finishing 13-under.

The Riverside course played at 7,142 yards for the event. The average player score was 72.28.

TRITON TIDBITS
• There were three teams ranked in the national top-100 competing including BYU (44), Colorado (56), and New Mexico State (84).
• Sophomore Kyle Dougherty cupped an eagle on the par-five 13th in Monday's second round.
• It was the final tournament for senior Elliot Bunyaviroch.
• This was the first time that UC San Diego has competed at this tournament.
• The PING Cougar Classic dates back to 1963. Utah State and Aggie Mike Sweet were the first-ever team and individual winners. 
• There were four Big West teams competing - CSUN, Hawai'i, UC San Diego, and UC Santa Barbara.
