HONOLULU—UC San Diego baseball dropped a pitcher's duel, 1-0, to Hawai'i on Friday evening at Les Murakami Stadium. The Tritons (21-11, 10-3 Big West) suffered their fourth one-run loss of the season, moving to 3-5 in the all-time series with the Rainbow Warriors (15-12, 5-5 Big West).
Starter
Michael Mitchell went 5.0 scoreless innings, allowing three hits with one walk and five strikeouts.
Ryan Forcucci (2-1) was credited with the loss despite 3.0 solid innings, allowing one run on one hit with one walk and five strikeouts.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Tritons threatened in the top of the first with runners on the corners with two outs, but were unable to bring in a run.
Mitchell was strong through his five innings of work, holding the Rainbow Warriors scoreless and facing just three batters over the minimum. Mitchell collected five strikeouts to keep the game scoreless early.
UC San Diego threatened again in the top of the sixth, with two runners on and one out but a runner was caught stealing and a fielder's choice ended the inning without a run once again for the Tritons.
Forcucci came in to begin the sixth and struck out the side, holding UH off the board through 2.2 innings. A two-out RBI double broke the 0-0 tie in the bottom of the eighth and proved to be the difference in the ballgame.
TRITON TIDBITS
- It was the fourth one-run loss of the season for the Tritons and second shutout.
- Michael Mitchell and Ryan Forcucci combined for 10 strikeouts and just four hits allowed and only one walk issued apiece.
- Matt Halbach registered the only multi-hit performance of the night.
- With the loss, the Tritons moved to 3-5 in the all-time series with Hawai'i.
